Famous for its beautiful furniture and interior crafts, Pokharan is a small town located in Jaisalmer district in western Rajasthan. It is a wonderful destination, which served as the test site for India's first underground nuclear weapon detonation. Located at an elevation of 233 m, Pokharan is surrounded by rock, sand and five salt ranges. Pokharan means "the place of five mirages". Pokharan is easily accessible from the main cities of Rajasthan such as Jodhpur and Jaisalmer.
Fort Pokharan
Sprawling over the Thar Desert, Fort Pokharan is an outstanding attraction of Pokharan. The beautiful fort was built in yellow sandstone by the chief of the Champawats, the clan of Rathores of the state of Marwar-Jodhpur. The history of the fort dates back to the 14th?century. Also known as “Balagarh”, the fort encompasses several stunning establishments such as Phool Mahal, Mangal Niwas, Rani Mahal and Hawa Mahal. The exquisite architecture of the fort deserves mention. The Fort has been converted into a heritage hotel offering royal accommodation to its guests. The on-site restaurant of the hotel serves mouth-watering culinary delights.
Located within the boundary of the fort is a beautiful temple, dedicated to goddess Durga. Pay a visit to the museum inside the fort where a wide variety of artefacts belonging to the bygone era are on display. Some of the goods of historic importance in the museum are miniature paintings, armoury, costumes of the erstwhile kings and pottery items.
Ramdeora Fair of Pokharan
It is an important fair of Pokharan, which brings the Thar Desert alive. The fair is organized twice a year, in the month of August and February. The fair offers beautiful handicrafts of Rajasthan. Visitors can also enjoy amazing traditional cuisine of Rajasthan in the fair. The fair is full of entertainment and fun.
