A Wonderful 'Starter Expedition' For Trekkers.
If one has trekked in the Himalayas before, he/she can climb this 6,137 m (20,135 feet) high peak rather easily. Stok Kangri is often an initial non-technical foray into high altitude mountaineering. This popular trekking peak does not require any typical experience. Located in Hemis National Park in the village of Stok, the peak is 24 km southwest of the Ladakhi capital of Leh. It boasts of being the highest mountain in the Stok Range of the Himalayas.
Stok Kangri offers a wonderful view of the remote valleys, scattered high villages and? hilltop monasteries surrounded by the snow clad peaks. The monasteries of Spituk and Stok Palace are the major attractions near Stok Kangri. These monasteries depict the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh. Lying in one of the most scenic places of Ladakh, Stok Kangri is known for its out of-the-world beauty, high altitude shepherds of local villages, and the untouched and unpolluted culture of Tibet-Ladakh.
The peak becomes snow free in July and August, and the south ridge provides wonderful climbing opportunities. The peak and its nearby landscapes were opened to visitors in 1974. The trekking route is interesting and offers stunning views of the Karakoram range. The higher region is a favourite place of Yak herders.
