Located at an altitude of 3,200 m, Gangotri is a revered shine in India. Renowned as an important pilgrimage for Hindus, Gangotri is among the Char Dham pilgrimages. Lies in the beautiful atmosphere of Uttarakashi, it is related to Goddess Ganga, which is the river known as Ganges. Dating back to centuries, the history of Ganga talks about the legends when Goddess Ganga transformed herself into a river to wash away the sins of King Bhagirath’s forefathers by following his penance. To decrease the impact of her fall, Lord Shiva collected Ganga into his matted locks. Since then, it has been associated with Goddess Ganga.
Gangotri Temple
Built in the early 18th century, the Gangotri temple entices a large number of devotees every year.
The present temple has a shrine of Gangotri which remains open on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya. The mother Ganga is regarded as Goddess here. Before starting the Puja rituals, taking a holy dip in the nearby Ganga is a must. The Pujari's (priest) are from the Brahmin community from Mukhwa village. Ten of them are chosen by rotation annually to perform all the functions including the temple and they also perform the duties of pandas.
Submerged Shivling
Lies near the main temple, this natural Shivling is believed to be the place where Ganga was received by Lord Shiva in his locks. It is visible in the winters only when the water is clear.
Harsil
Located two km away from Dharali, Harsil is another spectacular village which is known for its scenic beauty. The specialty of Harsil lies in a large number of apple orchards, spread across the village.
Bhagirathi Shila
This is the rock where King Bhagirath is believed to have meditated. This stone situated at the temple of Ganga signifies the site where the mother Ganga first stepped down to earth.
