The holy shrine of Yamunotri and the source of the river Yamuna is one of the four pilgrimage spots of Char Dham. Lying amidst the lap of the Tehri Garhwal region in Uttaranchal, it is the place from where river yamuna flows. The river starts from the Champasar glacier close to the Bandar Poonch and Shrikanth peaks. Yamunotri has various hot water springs as well as glaciers with medicinal properties. The small Yamuna has icy cold water and its infantile purity increases that deep feeling of reverence among devotees.
The Temple
The Yamunotri temple is the prime attraction here. Here you can see the deity in black marble. The Yamuna has been elevated to the sculptures of divine mother for the Hindus. The legends say that the place was the hermitage of ancient sage Asit Muni. He regularly bathed in Ganga and Yamua. In his old age when he was unable to go to Gangotri, a stream of Ganga appeared opposite for him which is said to be Yamunotri. Nearby the temple, there are hot water springs flowing out from the mountain cavities.
Surya Kund
There are different thermal springs in the close vicinity of the temple, flowing into numerous pools. The kund is known for its high temperature of 190? F. Pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in this kund which they offer to deity in the temple.
Divya Shila
There is a slab of stone, known as Divya Shila. It is said to be the slab of divine light. It is worshipped before the puja is offered to Yamuna. It is considered to worship this rock pillar before entering the Yamunotri Temple.
Hanuman Chatti
It is one among the thrilling climbs in the rocky terrain. Situated 13 km away from Yamunotri, it is the place from where you can also embark on a tedious trek. The trek can be done on foot or on ponies.
