The sacred place of Kedarnath is the seat of Lord Shiva. Situated at an elevation of 3,584 at river Mandakini, it is among 12 'Jyotirlingas' of Lord Shiva. Kedarnath houses several Kunds (tanks) which hold religious significance. These include Shivkund, Hanskund, Retkund, Rudhirkund and Udakkund are the important ones. The shrine has a Garbha Griha for worship and a Mandap, which make it suitable for assemblies of devotees and visitors. Inside the temple, a conical rock formation is present in Sadashiva form, is worshipped.
The Temple
The shrine of Kedarnath Temple is considered as an important pilgrimage for the Hindus. Lying in the backdrop of the beautiful Sri Kedarnath range, the Temple is a 14 km trek from Gaurikund. It is believed that in the land, Lord Shiva was enshrined by Adi Guru Shankaracharya who was a great scholar and saint. Kedar meaning powerful is among the popular names of Lord Shiva, the protector and the destroyer. The inner walls of the assembly hall are adorned with idols of different deities and scenes from mythology. A big statue of Nandi Bull stands as guard outside the temple door.
Vasuki Tal
Located at an altitude of 14, 200 ft, Vasuki Tal lies on the right part of the valley. Just 6 km away from Kedarnath, this lake offers impressive surroundings of natural beauty.
Son Prayag
Situated at the confluence of the Son-Ganga and Mandakini, this enchanting village offers picturesque beauty of nature.
Gaurikund
Dedicated to Goddess Gauri of Parvati, an ancient temple is known as Gaurikund. It houses the metallic statues of Gauri and Shiva. Legend says that Goddess Parvati meditated here to win Shiva as her consort. When she succeeded, the cosmic couple was wed at Trijuginarayan.
Besides these places, there are five shrines of Lord Shiva, which are known as Panch Kedar. These are the places where the body parts of God appeared. The face appeared at Rudranath, the arms at Tungnath, the belly at Madmeshwar and his locks or hair with head at Kalpeshwar.
